The Next Business Advantage Isn't Using AI. It's Managing It Well.

CEOWORLD Magazine published a piece this week arguing that the next real advantage in business belongs to leaders who can manage machine labor as deliberately as they manage people — and the data backs it up. 88% of businesses now report regular AI use in at least one function, and 62% say they're at least experimenting with AI agents. AI usage itself has stopped being a differentiator. Nearly everyone has it.

What's actually separating results is something less obvious: the ability to define work clearly enough that a fast, imperfect system can produce something useful without creating a mess to clean up afterward. That's a genuinely different skill than knowing how to do a task yourself, and it's one most managers were never trained for, because it didn't exist as a job requirement three years ago.

There's real research behind why this matters. A recent NBER study of over 5,000 customer support agents found that access to a generative AI assistant lifted productivity by 14% on average — but by 34% for novice and lower-skilled workers specifically. In other words, the biggest gains didn't go to the people who needed AI least. They went to the people who needed the most structure to do good work, and got it from the tool. That's a management insight as much as a technology one: AI's biggest ROI often shows up where you give the least experienced person on your team the clearest possible scaffolding.

The takeaway for a small business owner isn't "adopt more AI." Most of you already have some AI tool running somewhere. It's "get specific about what a good outcome looks like for each task you're handing to it" — because the businesses separating themselves right now aren't the ones with the most AI. They're the ones managing it the most deliberately.
