New orders for manufactured durable goods were virtually unchanged at $338.6 billion in August 2026 after two monthly increases, the Census Bureau reported.

Underneath the flat total, orders excluding transportation rose 0.3 percent and orders excluding defense rose 0.1 percent. Transportation equipment fell 0.6 percent and drove the overall decrease.

The aggregate was flat because large categories moved differently. That is a useful warning for any company reading a broad market number as a direct demand signal.

Separate the mix that actually reaches the business. Track orders by customer type, product family, margin, lead time, cancellation risk, and capacity required. One large project can make a total look healthy while the repeatable base weakens. The reverse can also happen.

A headline reports the sum. An operating plan must understand the composition.
